The First Substack Newsletter!
A new direction, a fresh outlook, and an easier way to communicate to my followers!
A New Direction…
Welcome everyone! If you’ve been a long time follower of mine on social media or just found me not even 5 minutes ago, I want to extend a gracious “Thank you!” and welcome you all to Substack. After hemming and hawing of finding a way around social media to let people know about what projects I have in the pipeline or what convention(s) I have that month, it just made sense to do a monthly newsletter to let people know at the same time what’s going down. So let’s get to it, shall we?
1. First and foremost- subscribe & share! It’s FREE
The comic creative community survives off of this regarding networking online, so please click the subscribe button below if you haven’t and share with your friends my Substack page so they can know as well!
2. Lines On A Page Season 2 Episode 005
This month’s episode with special guest & good friend Kristian Herrera was a fun one! We got to talk a bit about being an independant comic book creator, the comic scene in the Atlanta area, putting yourself out there on Kickstarter, and a few side tangents here and there. Link to watch on YouTube here
Lines On A Page (for those of you not in the know) is a relaxed monthly/biweekly live drawing show that I do on Sunday nights (when my multi camera set up are being nice), and usually cover a specific topic/technique or showing how I approach drawing a character(s).
3. “Derailment” pitch went a bit meta…
This month, I’ve been working on character design, storyboards, and (soon) interiors for a military/sci-fi pitch with writer Reid Beaman called “Derailment”. Reid sent me the script earlier this year and I enjoyed the concept of doing something a bit “summer blockbuster” in scope. During the storyboard phase, I kept hitting a wall with interpreting panels visually on certain pages, so the project got derailed (pun!) for a time and now it’s back on track (double pun!).
4. The sword & planet creator owned comic project…
For the last year, I’ve been silently working off and on the world building of a different take on the sword & planet sub genre of sci-fi. Typically, the idea of said term is John Carter of Mars or Tarnsmen of Gor or things of that nature. I wanted to remove those preconceived notions and looked at various comics, manga, and video games of my childhood for inspiration. Imagine: a planet where many island city-states are dwarfed by floating continents, a planet where science and magic are one in the same, a place where a band of six different warriors have to work together for the good of the planet. I give to you…
I’m pretty excited about this project. Still, a lot is left to do, as it will be a lengthy one shot and I’m basically doing it all: writing, drawing, coloring, & lettering. My plan is to have the pre-launch page of it on Kickstarter by mid August, with the first several completed pages available to read to give readers a taste of what’s to come.
And now to the special part at the end of every newsletter, the Secret Archives! A place where I share either a book, a movie, a video game, or an album that I’ve been enjoying and think you should check it out too.
This month’s pick from the Secret Archives is… Record of Lodoss War: The Lady of Pharis! I’ve been rereading this book multiple times this month, partly because I’m a sucker for D&D inspired fantasy and getting something out of Akihiro Yamada’s line work. He’s admitted to being very influenced by John Buscema’s run in Conan the Barbarian, and it’s interesting to see this style utilized in manga. Some images from the book:
This is an older book, so be aware that if you try to find a used copy online that scalpers are charging outrageous amounts. I was fortunate enough to snag mine from 2nd & Charles several years back, but still hunting for a copy of the second volume. I always recommend that place or Thrift Books to find out of print comics/manga.
Until next time,
Thomas Price
Welcome!
